You work hard at your crafts, spend a lot of money and would like to get a little bit of return for all of your time, energy, creativity and expenses. Crafting is a big business and with the downturn in the economy and the rising prices we are all looking for ways to increase our income. And for some of us we just want to get out of our dead end jobs and make money at something we actually enjoy doing. To that end we would suggest that you get your products out there to as many people as you can as quickly as you can. One of those ways is using the internet.
You can purchase your own website, create your pages, upload all of your photos, and pay the monthly hosting fees. You will need to purchase your own domain and pay for renewal of that name each year. Most of the web hosting companies even offer generic templates that you can use. Keep in mind you will need to incorporate a shopping cart feature so that your customers can purchase more than one item at a time. You will need to sign up with a credit card processing company such as PAYPAL that will give you the coding to incorporate with your shopping cart and website.
We have one of those at: http://jolenesbooksandmore.com. We have a Verified Business Account with Paypal that we have incorporated with our website. There is a lot of work involved with the website in maintenance, keeping it fresh, uploading new products and much more. But you will have complete control of the look, the content and how your sales are reported. We use GoDaddy for our hosting and Zencart for the shopping cart feature.
If you are new to the Internet or just don’t want to go through all that hassle then you can create a user account with YARDSELLR. Which is a social selling website that allows anyone to sign up for an account for FREE. There are not fees to sell any of your items. The buyers must pay a small fee for everything they buy. You can upload 1 to 4 photos of your items, type in a description, and decide on a shipping charge because they require that all items be shipped with a tracking number that is sent to the buyers once the items are shipped. The downside to their website is that you have to relist your items every 30 days and you have no control over the colors of your site, you do not have your own name. You do need to have a FACEBOOK or TWITTER account so that you can send notices to all of your friends and relatives about your items for sale. Be sure to read all of their rules and Help Pages before you start your sale. There are limits to what you can offer for sale. You can look at our Yardsale to get some ideas for your own.
And finally, you should look at the ETSY website that is also a social selling website. They have more limits as to what you can offer for sale and they charge the sellers $0.20 per item listed as well as a processing fee for each transaction. You have to relist your items every 4 months and repay the listing fee for each item you relist. You also do not have much control over the look and feel of your site nor over name of your site. To increase you exposure you will need to post to your FACEBOOK, TWITTER and/or PINIT accounts on each of the items you post. This is a new thing for us and we are just now getting items posted to it this month. Remember, the more people who view your products, the more likely you will make a sale! Below is a script from Etsy of our products that we can post to any website we own.
